Aromatherapy As A Powerful Sunscreen

Summer is here and the need to protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays is eminent. Knowing that the skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything we put onto it, it is important that we only apply the most natural sources of skin care and protection. Medicinal Aromatherapy has been used since ancient times, and plant medicine is the original medicine on the planet.

A powerful alternative to the sunscreens that are for sale at the local drug store or health store is a combination of two hydrolets – Helichrysum and Lavender. Hydrolets are the liquid byproduct of the steam distillation process. As the essence is extracted from the plant material using steam, the water that is separated from the oil is the hydrolet. It contains the healing energy, scent, and plant much like the essence itself. Hydrolets come in a spray and are easy to apply and less expensive than the more dense oil. As we know, oil attracts the sunrays. The liquid absorbs into the skin and works immediately without any harmful effects.

Helichrysum is a powerful skin regenerator from the sunflower family that both hydrates and moisturizes the skin, preventing dryness while protecting the tissues. It helps to improve and repair the skin, is a wound-healer, and is very soothing on sensitive skin. Helichrysum has been used to help reduce acne breakouts and is used as a first aid essence on cuts, scratches, or injuries. It is also an anti-inflammatory, scar repairer, immune system stimulant, and has been known to heal stretch marks. Lavender is a gentle healer on cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. It is very soothing and helps to calm, relax, and regenerate the tissues. Lavender is the most powerful plant medicine for burns, redness, swelling, and skin irritations. It is a skin hydrator and moisturizes dry, chapped skin while promoting scar and wound healing. Lavender helps to calm the nerves and reduce inflammation and is also an anti-depressant.

When using Helichrysum and Lavender Hydrolets, simply spray the hydrolets, one at a time, on the exposed area of the skin. Allow them to absorb and dry, and then enjoy your time in the sun. It is good to reapply every hour or so, as you would do with sunscreen, to keep a strong protective shield on the skin surface. Personally, I apply the Helichrysum first, and then the Lavender, although the order does not matter. Water allows the plant oils to go deeper into the body, so by nature, hydrolets are deeply penetrable. Remember that we are what we think, so as you apply this sacred plant medicine onto your body, use consciousness, reverence, and have faith in the fact that it will work for you. Expect a positive outcome and watch the magic of the trees and plants as they soothe and protect your skin in the sun!

  1. Dear Lemia, I am so grateful to you for sharing this knowledge. I have been using Helichrysum Hydrolet in and around my eyes on a daily basis with soothing results and look forward to adding the Lavender Hydrolet to my routine for sun protection. I appreciate that the Wisdom of the Earth brand essences that you give your workshops on and that you sell, are either Biodynamically cultivated or harvested in the wild. They work very well for me and I’m happy to know they support the best agricultural practices possible. Thank you.
