Treat Me Naturally!

Essential Oils

“Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food.” ~ Hippocrates

We awake from winter slumber with the oncoming spring equinox. There are many ways to embrace the season’s energy to access your optimal wellness. One of my favorite methods of connecting to our earth naturally is through aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant-derived extracts and essential oils for holistic healing. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy further elaborates it as “the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance and harmonize the health of body, mind and spirit.” The ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates urged “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” My inner hippie enjoys applying flower and herbal essential oils as a clean, modern and non-invasive science complemented by ancient prescriptions.

Like all animals, humans respond to seasonal changes. Celebrate the energy stirring within, and empower your own clarity.

Aromatherapy for the Seasons

Aromatherapy can provide a natural path to healing. Certain essential oils are bactericidal and help stimulate the body’s immune system to reduce the risk of secondary infections. Essential oils can be effective to prevent or help already existing conditions. Here are a few simple ways you can incorporate aromatherapy into your life:

• Diffusing essential oils into the air by using an ultrasonic diffuser or humidifier

• Diffuse a pot of boiling water on the stove for simple steam inhalation

• Disinfect household items (toothbrushes, sponges, toilets, etc.) using a few drops along with a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water

• Add a couple drops of your favorite essential oils to your warm bath for relaxation and rejuvenation

• Apply to the skin topically using a carrier oil such as almond or coconut oil

• Make your own essential oil balms, body butter, and body oils to nourish your skin throughout the seasons
